Photos of Classic English Setters and their owners gathering in Joan Mizer's Honor. Joan's bloodline is represented in all the setters but one, and her parents bloodline is in other setters in the photos below.
Joan started breeding setters in 1945, she helped the English setter breed flourish as some of the Best Bird Dogs in the USA. Joan helped most everyone find just the right hunters and companion dogs for them. She was known throughout the United States and Canada, and her Pedigrees are found in the "Willie Walker English Setter Database, created by Andrea Strobyl of Austria. Andrea is creating a Breeder Profile in her database in Joan's honor (a link will be added.)
We cannot, as English setter owners, ever repay her for these wonderful dogs. Health, well being and improving the breed was always paramount in her choices for breeding couples. Joan was a stringent proponent in helping to eradicate the crippling Hip Dysplasia plaguing over one third of English setters. She has the most dogs within her bloodline in certifications in the Orthopedic Foundations Database and received acknowledgement from OFA Veternarians.
Joan was a graduate of M.I.T. with a Masters Degree in Geology and a graduate from the University of Michigan with a Masters Degree in Mathematics. Simply put she was brilliant.
While trying to write and keep up with her as she recalled Pedigrees from memory, registered names, call names, colors and very often the Sire and Dam of each setter brings a smile among her friends. She was always willing to help whether it was looking for a puppy, finding the right setter for a breeding, talking about whelping, hunting, birds, medical issues or placing puppies into just the right homes. Joan Mizer, was one-of-a-kind and will be greatly missed.
